Attention Homeowners:

Please be aware when hiring a contractor to do work on your house ask if they have the Home Improvement Contractors License. As of January 1, 2006 the state of NJ required all contractors to obtain a home improvement contractors license. A contractor working on your house must have this in order to obtain permits. According to law final inspections are required before final payment can be issued to contractor. This requirement was instituted by the state to help stop the flood of complaints against "fly by night" contractors who don't finish jobs or take deposits and never start a job This is for your protection.Find out more.

What needs a permit
  • Roof replacement in excess of 25% of roof
  • All siding work
  • Sheds in excess of 100 square feet (all sheds require zoning permit)
  • All structure framing
  • Decks
  • Additions
  • Central Air Conditioning
  • Pole barns of any size
  • New construction of any type
  • Removal of asbestos

The above is a short list If you are unsure if a permit is required please call the building department with your questions its a good idea to check with the building department before you begin any work. Current laws allow penalties of up to $2,000.00 for doing work without permits. Call and ask its cheaper.
